Wera plays its “Joker” – and wins

Open-end wrench snatches coveted design award
iF product design award for Wuppertal-based branded...

Open-end wrench snatches coveted design award

iF product design award for Wuppertal-based branded goods manufacturer / Award-winning from more than 3.000 submissions / Wrench convinces the jury thanks to its specific product benefits / Extension of the range with additional dimensions in spring 2013 /

Hanover/Wuppertal. It managed to convince them: the jury members responsible for this year’s iF product design award – one of the most significant design competitions worldwide. It, the “Joker” by Wera – the Wuppertal-based tool manufacturer – is a combination ratchet wrench with specially forged geometry and particular product advantages. The open-end wrench in a practical 4-piece set took top spot from over 3,000 submissions and was the winner in the category “Industry / Skilled Trades” which, besides tools, also encompasses machinery, industrial scanners, vendor parts and other technical products. The assessment criteria for the internationally renowned design award include aspects such as the design quality, degree of innovation, functionality and ergonomics.

The “Joker” has got everything a winner needs; after all it is not just a wrench but indeed a whole lot more. This means that the user is able to apply the “Joker” when other tools have already reached the end of their tether: quite in keeping with the role of a joker!

Maybe it was its multi-talent that convinced the jury, but perhaps it was the individual advantages like the holding function that allows for the application of bolt and nut without any need for additional tools and effectively prevents any falling out from the jaw. Or was it the limit stop that reduces the risk of the wrench slipping downwards; thus allowing more power to be applied to the actual screwdriving job at hand. Perhaps the jury was also convinced about the double-hex geometry and the hard pointed tips in the metal plate that ensure a perfect connection between wrench and nut whilst reducing the risk of slipping at higher torque loads. Another aspect may also have been the small return angle of only 30 degrees that allows for work even in very confined environments. This makes it unnecessary to need to flip the wrench around. Nobody knows in detail why the jury took their decision. According to the manufacturer, the “Joker” is nothing more than a “reinvention of the open-end wrench”.

For the user the advantages are all too obvious – and that’s what it’s all about! So even in the most difficult screwdriving circumstances the user can remain calm knowing there is a “Joker” in the toolbox. Moreover, it is interesting to note that the range will be extended by both metric and imperial dimensions from the spring of 2013. Let’s wait and see just how wide the “Joker” can open his jaw and keep on smiling.

“Kraftform Kompakt Zyklop” in a practical complete set

Multifunctional appliance enables high working speeds / Replaces five
ratchets / Convenient handling thanks to its ergonomic Kraftform handle /
Compact set with many bits and sockets for safe transportation and
storage of tool and accessories / Suitable for both manual and power tool
applications / Small, practical belt pouch /

Wuppertal. The Zyklop ratchet by the Wuppertal-based branded goods
manufacturer Wera is now also available in a compact format. Its specific
design has already made it a real hit on the international tool market. The
professional user particularly appreciates the high working speeds and its
multifunctionality. After all, some five different types of ratchet are
combined here in a single tool, which can additionally be used as a
screwdriver.

The ratchet head can be freely swivelled and has five different fixed
positions. The fine-tooth mechanism ensures a minimal return angle of only
5°, something which allows for effective work even when the space
available is very confined. Moreover, the clockwise/anticlockwise
directional switch can be triggered in any position. A ball locking device
ensures a secure fit of the sockets. However, they can be easily released
in every position. The ergonomic Kraftform handle makes handling even
easier and in the 0° position the tool becomes a screwdriver when
equipped with bits.

The new “Kraftform Kompakt Zyklop” set (KK Zyklop) is the next resolute
step in the direction of compact tools, a concept that Wera has already
successfully implemented in many areas. Wera’s KK Zyklop now offers the
trade and industry a ratchet application in a compact set that is as
sophisticated as it is practical. It provides a ratchet and a number of tools
for both manual and power tool applications that can be easily accessed
even in confined spaces and yet can be securely stored for transportation.
Another advantage of the KK Zyklop is that it can be used with both bits as
well as sockets.

In addition to the Zyklop ratchet with a ¼’’ drive, the 26-piece professional
set also includes seven metric sockets, an extension with a free-turning
sleeve, an adaptor for bits as well as 16 bits of a length of 50 mm. The
tools are housed in a clearly arranged and practical folding pouch that can
be attached to the belt.

Wera at the International Hardware Fair 2012
New “Extra Slim” Kraftform Kompakt VDE blades for electrical applications

Screwdrivers with conventional insulated profiles often cannot be used in
electrical installations / Extra slim “VDE Kompakt blades” can access
recessed screws in electrical components / Belt pouch with
15 interchangeable blades and a “Kraftform-VDE” handle / Safety thanks to
individual test of the blades at 10,000 volts /

Cologne / Wuppertal. “Kraftform Kompakt VDE” is one of the most
popular Wera Tools ranges, offering unbeatable versatility, customisation
and portability for electricians. This range has now been perfectly rounded
off with the launch of the new “Kraftform Kompakt VDE Extra Slim”
interchangeable blades at the International Hardware Fair 2012.
In screwdriving applications with electrical equipment, VDE screwdrivers
often have their use restricted by the diameter of the insulated blade. For
example, for recessed screws found in sprung cage terminal blocks and
RCBO’s, the blade has to be inserted deep into the terminals to reach the
screw or spring element – impossible with traditional VDE screwdrivers.
With this in mind, Wera recently launched a range of “Ultra Slim” VDE
screwdrivers, designed exactly for this type of application. The product an
overnight success, and so now Wera have also announced the addition of
the “Ultra Slim” interchangeable blades to the “Kraftform Kompakt VDE”
range.
These new blades feature a greatly reduced blade diameter when
compared with conventional VDE screwdrivers, allowing recessed screws
in electrical components to be easily and safely reached.
Despite their slender design, they are very robust and boast a long service
life. The protective insulation is integrated into the blade and is practically
wear-free, so frayed insulations become a thing of the past.
The “Kraftform Kompakt VDE extra slim” is available from the trade in a
practical user set. A rugged belt pouch contains 14 interchangeable blades
with the profiles Phillips, Pozidriv, TORX®, slotted and PlusMinus in various
dimensions, a voltage tester, and a “Kraftform VDE” handle with hexagon
chuck for connection to the blades. The insulated interchangeable blades
are easily and rapidly inserted into the handle, and permanently locked
until released – preventing any unintentional removal.
The insulated interchangeable blades by Wera fulfil all the safety
requirements specified in German and international standards (DIN EN
60900 or IEC 60900:2004), being individually tested at 10,000 volts. This
ten-time higher testing load ensures safe working at the maximum
permissible voltage of 1,000 volts.

Further information:
Wera Tools UK Ltd
Units 1-2 McGregors Way, Turnoaks Bus. During the campaign period between March and August 2012 Wera will be offering a specially filled “Lunchbox” to its customers.

After all – says a somewhat tongue-in-cheek Wera representative – every professional needs two things to carry out flawless screwdriving work: first class, market-leading bits…and something great for lunch! And with Wera bits, the job both before and after the lunchbreak is twice as enjoyable.

The plastic “Lunchbox” features unmistakable Wera design, can be securely closed, is food-safe and can be separated with the individually removable dividers into one, two or four sections. The box contains hygienically packed Wera bits in the most popular sizes, ensuring users are equipped for most conventional screwdriving tasks.

Just add some delicious, suitably nourishing snacks and the hard-working professional has everything he needs for a tough day at work.

Alternatively, the box can of course also be used to store other small parts.

Further information:
Wera Tools UK Ltd
Units 1-2 McGregors Way, Turnoaks Bus.
Seriously Clever: Wera reinvents the wrench with the “Joker”

Innovation at the International Hardware Fair 2012Seriously Clever: Wera reinvents the wrench with...

Innovation at the International Hardware Fair 2012
Seriously Clever: Wera reinvents the wrench with the “Joker”

Combination ratchet wrench with innovative properties / Holding function for bolts and nuts / Limit stop prevents slipping of the wrench from the bolt head / Hardened metal plate with extremely hard tips that “bite” themselves into the bolt / Small return angle of 30° / Ratchet mechanism with fine toothing at the ring end / Available in the wrench dimensions 10, 13, 17 and 19 mm / Pouch set available

Cologne / Wuppertal. With the multi-function “Zyklop”, Wera Tools transformed the ratchet. With the outstanding “Impaktor” bit system, they revolutionised impact driver screwdriving. The list goes on… Continuing this trend of dynamic, industry-changing innovation, Wera have now completely reinvented the humble wrench, that hitherto basic yet indispensable tool – the Joker has landed!

The German screwdriving specialist presented this latest innovation for the first time at the International Hardware Fair 2012. “All professional card players are happy to have a joker in their hands, as this increases their chances of winning quite considerably. That is why we have chosen the name of Joker for our new, rather clever combination ratchet wrench”, explained Wera UK boss Ian Walford on the occasion of the fair presentation.

But what is actually behind this ‘wrench 2.0’– and was it really necessary to reinvent this simple screwdriving tool? As Wera emphasised at the fair, the “Joker” cannot only do everything that a combination ratchet wrench needs to do, but much more. In this respect the manufacturer points to four particularly striking product advantages that offer users added value and therefore constitute decisive sales arguments for the trade.

Advantage 1: Holding function
The “Joker” offers a practical holding function that allows nuts and bolts to be held in the jaw and easily positioned where they are needed. Fastening on to the thread can then be done quickly and precisely.
After applying and positioning the nut or bolt, fastening can begin immediately – no additional tools required. No more time-wasting searches for dropped nuts and bolts!

Advantage 2: Limit stop
Constant re-positioning of the wrench? Difficulty holding fasteners in confined spaces? Easing off to avoid any risks of injury or fastener damage? That was yesterday.
Today, the Joker prevents slipping off of the fastener head with its integrated limit-stop – no longer is the thumb needed to act as a depth stop. This makes things much easier, and allows significantly more force to be applied during fastening jobs.

Advantage 3: Anti-slip effect
The Joker’s clever double-hex geometry delivers a very positive connection with nuts or bolts – it’s a perfect fit. And the exchangeable, hardened metal gripping plate in the Joker’s mouth literally bites itself into the bolt with its extremely hard tips. Both features combine to prevent any unpleasant slipping, even at higher torque.

Advantage 4: Very small return travel angle
Where conventional wrenches with a 60° return travel angle have to be turned over and over to tighten or loosen bolts and nuts in confined spaces, the “Joker” now offers a 30° return travel angle with a double-hex design. Along with the Joker’s straight neck, this means that flipping the wrench has become a thing of the past. With the Joker, you can now loosen and tighten nuts and bolts, in situations where conventional tools fail, particularly in confined spaces where conventional open-jawed wrenches fail.

The ratchet mechanism at the ring end of the “Joker” has a fine toothing design with 80 teeth, enabling screwdriving even when the space is very confined.

All in all, the new combination ratchet wrench can solve screwdriving tasks in almost any conceivable situation rapidly and with great precision. And the user also has good cards in terms of the service life. A special forged geometry in combination with high performance chrome molybdenum steel and a nickel-chrome coating ensure high resistance to wear and dependable corrosion protection.

Every “Joker” can be immediately recognised even at a distance thanks to its distinctive aesthetic product design and specifically created logo, which is reminiscent of a winking “smiley”. “Because it functions so much better than conventional wrenches, the “Joker” will become the new favourite wrench among users”, says the convinced Wera UK Managing Director.
During the important launch phase Wera will promote the new combination ratchet wrench heavily, to enable potential users to quickly become familiar with it and ensure they recognise it in-store.

The “Joker” by Wera is available in the conventional wrench dimensions 10, 13, 17 and 19 mm individually or as a set in a folding velcro pouch. The individual packing units are equipped with a “try me” function which allows the “Joker” to be tested on a bolt head out of plastic material.

Further information:
Wera Tools UK Ltd
Units 1-2 McGregors Way, Turnoaks Bus.

Wera at the International Hardware Fair 2012
New “Big Packs” from Wera - each with 14 screwdrivers covering every application

General Purpose or VDE screwdrivers with various profiles and dimensions and storage rack / “Kraftform” handles for ergonomic, safe working / “Lasertip” tips prevent any slipping of the tool out of the screw head /

Cologne / Wuppertal. Sometimes, it really is a question of size. The Wuppertal-based screwdriving specialist Wera Tools has put together two particularly large screwdriver sets for the Hardware Fair 2012 in Cologne. The new “Wera Big Packs” contain all the screwdrivers a professional would normally need, leaving them optimally equipped for almost any application.

There are two different “Wera Big Packs”. They each contain 14 screwdrivers and two wall-mountable storage racks where the tools can be neatly displayed. The version “Big Pack 300” includes Series 300 General Purpose screwdrivers with the profiles Phillips, Pozidriv, TORX® and slotted in various dimensions. The “Big Pack 160i” comprises individually tested insulated VDE screwdrivers with the profiles Phillips, Pozidriv, TORX®, slotted and PlusMinus. Additionally, a new “extra slim” screwdriver with greatly reduced blade diameter is also included. This screwdriver features integrated protective insulation so that even recessed screws can be easily reached - ideal for sprung cage terminal blocks and RCBO’s

All screwdrivers boast the proven “Kraftform” design handle for ergonomic, safe working. The design, which fits perfectly into the hand, prevents any undue strains and injuries; and a useful anti-roll feature is integrated into the handle. A distinct marking on the handle allows for rapid selection of the appropriate screwdriver without any need to inspect the blade.

The Phillips, Pozidriv and slotted tools are additionally provided with anti-cam out “Lasertip” tips. This prevents the annoying slipping of the screwdriving tool out of the head of the screw, making screwdriving jobs simpler and faster.

Further information:
Wera Tools UK Ltd
Units 1-2 McGregors Way, Turnoaks Bus.
New bit complements the “Impaktor” system for cordless impact drivers

Wera at the International Hardware Fair 2012
New bit complements the “Impaktor” system for cordless impact drivers

For use with all impact drivers, even 18/24V, and all extreme applications / New “Impaktor” system with 10-times longer service life* / Range extended by the “Impaktor” TORX® 20 bit / Bits and bit holder with a total of three torsion zones / Screwdriving tool system diverts kinetic energy away from the tip of the bit / Diamond particles reduce the contact pressure needed /

Cologne / Wuppertal. Since its 2011 launch, the “Impaktor” system from Wuppertal-based screwdriving specialist Wera Tools has proved itself to be indispensable for users of cordless impact drivers undertaking screwdriving jobs. In comparison to standard or torsion bits it offers as much as a ten-time longer service life depending on the output.

At the International Hardware Fair 2012 in Cologne, Wera presented a useful extension to the Impaktor range, introducing a new TORX® 20 (TX20) bit. It is available individually, as a 10pc box of bits, or in a new TORX® Bit-Check bit set. Moreover, three Impaktor TX20 bits have replaced the standard TX20 and PH1 bits previously included in the 30-piece Impaktor Bit-Check.

So-called impact screwdrivers place extreme demands on the accessories used, since the screw is tightened by means of consecutive radial strokes applied rapidly in the direction of turn. The high output performance of the tool and the permanently recurring peak torque loads exceed the physical limitations of most bits and bit holders. This results in above-average wear.

The basis for a longer service life with the “Impaktor” system is created during the manufacturing process, with a best possible utilisation of the material properties, individual hardening technology and an optimally designed geometry of the screwdriving tool. In this way Impaktor bits are precisely designed to match the respective type of output, and thereby the individual screwdriving application, and are equipped with a torsion zone. Their combination with the two additional torsion zones in the Impaktor bit holder creates the unique “TriTorsion” system. Depending upon the peak torque loads, two or three of the differently dimensioned torsion zones react automatically, allowing an optimum adaptation to the specific screwdriving application. This enables even more kinetic energy to be absorbed by this screwdriving tool system and diverted away from the tip of the bit. This results in an unbeatably long service life, even when subjected to extreme loads.

In addition, there are minute diamond particles on the tips of the “Impaktor” bits. They reduce the so-called ‘cam-out’ forces that lead to the bits slipping out of the screw head. Normally, a higher contact pressure is necessary with impact drivers, but the diamond particles literally “bite” themselves into the screw. This reduces the degree of contact pressure required and the user can spare energy even when using the power screwdriving tool for a longer period.

*Exact service life depends on a number of factors, including the tool used, materials driven into and type of screw/bit

Further information:
Wera Tools UK Ltd
Units 1-2 McGregors Way, Turnoaks Bus.
75 years of Wera: A grand tradition of innovative screwdriving tools

An established, reliable & respected tool manufacturer turns 75

Successful and internationally renowned group in the hand tool segment / Development and production of ergonomic and durable screwdriving tools for the trade and industry / Systematic and progressively organised innovation process as a recipe for success / Global property right strategy with international market monitoring

Wuppertal. Innovation from a great tradition is the hallmark of the screwdriving tool manufacturer Wera Werk Hermann Werner GmbH & Co. KG (Wuppertal). The company that was founded in 1936 will be celebrating its 75th anniversary in August 2011.

Wera has developed during the course of its corporate history to a successful and internationally renowned group in the hand tool segment. Instead of focusing on diversification, Wera has specialised resolutely over generations on the development and production of ergonomic and durable screwdriving tools for professionals – from screwdrivers, ratchets and bits to L-keys and torque tools.

When the company was founded in 1936 under the name of Hermann Werner KG, trading with tools was the focus of activities. The company name Wera originated in 1951 from the names of the owner families Werner und Amtenbrink. In the following decades it developed very successfully into a manufacturer. Today, Wera numbers among the leading suppliers of high quality screwdriving tools to the trade and industry. The company currently employs some 700 staff in Germany, the USA, Canada, England, Spain and the Czech Republic. Wera screwdriving tools are available worldwide thanks to a comprehensive marketing approach.

Nevertheless, Wera is still – and this is a point that is very much emphasized there – a family enterprise and decisions are always taken with a long-term view in mind. The basis for the company’s success is its relentless pursuit of innovations. Two groundbreaking products - among others - stand as examples for this sustainable innovative power:

The “Kraftform” screwdriving handle was launched in 1968 in a joint development with the Fraunhofer Institut. Since then it has been acknowledged both nationally and internationally. The shape of the handle fits perfectly into the human hand. The multi-component feature ensures an optimum combination of working speed and power transfer. The soft zones ensure a high degree of grip, meaning that hand injuries such as calluses or blisters are avoided. The integrated non-roll feature makes work even more convenient.

Additionally, Wera was one of the first German companies to produce bits for power tools. The manufacturer introduced the idea of diamond-coated bits to the market in 1992. Bits with a diamond coating have since ensured a secure fitting of the bit in the screw.

The innovative target is always to be able to offer users concrete, new problem solutions that have not previously been available on the market in such a form. A very successful, current example is the “Wera Zyklop” – a product that combines five different ratchets and a screwdriver in a single, extremely robust tool.

Wera attaches great importance to a systematic, progressively organised innovation process. Supported by the most modern technology and software, the individual development phases are always structured and success oriented. The process ranges from ideas management - that includes current creativity techniques – to the construction of prototypes and even extends to cover the application-oriented training of all staff and partners in sales. To offer customers the best possible benefit, users are involved at a very early stage in the development of any new products in the form of professionally implemented group sessions.

In addition, the “Werarium” in Wuppertal has been available to the trade and end users as a training and competence centre since 2006, something that is quite unique in this field of business. Some 700 square metres of space here allow Wera to provide information interactively on its performance and products.

Naturally, Wera permanently considers any current developments in the users’ day-to-day work. The increasing use of impact drivers in recent years was one of the aspects that had been observed. Therefore, it was only a matter of course for Wera to develop its “Impaktor” range. It is a system consisting of holders and bits that effectively counteracts the heavy impacts and the wear of the tool resulting from this.

To enable Wera to be successful worldwide in the future, too, the Wuppertal-based group pursues a global property right strategy. Thanks to international market monitoring, any infringement of property rights can be immediately addressed. Imitations are then removed from the market directly; stocks as well as any production resources are destroyed instantly.
